“I think I want to do Bikram again!”

This morning on our way to work, out of the blue, I say to Nick,

“I think I’m going to start doing some Bikram again…”

This seemed to be a little out of no where for Nick…maybe even myself. I was thinking recently that I needed to “crosstrain” (isn’t Crossfit sort of the DEFINITION of crosstraining?? What does someone do to crosstrain when they Crossfit?!). While I was scanning through the good ole’ FB this morning, I noticed my friend Stephanie posted one of my old blog post videos on someone’s wall…and guess what it was? My old Bikram vlog post. After watching it, I’m not 100% I’m convinced I WANT to try it again…but I may have to now, just to prove to myself it won’t kill me…or at least make another interesting video :)

Enjoy :)

PS: Nick and I are traveling down to LA tonight to begin our LONG weekend of CROSSFIT!!!!! The 2012 Crossfit Games begin on Friday at 8am (well, it actually started Wednesday, but for spectators…), and that is where we will be from Friday 8am to Sunday 8pm :) If you are watching on ESPN3.com…cheer a little harder for Alicia Gomes (our trainer back in Beverly, MA), she’s amazing!!!!

Much love,

Jen

How do YOU prepare?

How do you prepare for a workout?

…Let’s say the workout is Fran…what’s going on in your head right before the 3, 2, 1…?

Nick said before a workout he figures out how many sets and reps he wants to do at a time to pace himself…this does not surprise me, Nick is extremely LOGICAL :)

I, before a workout, stare at my bar…with lots of butterflies and deep breathes…and whispers sweet “eff you’s” to the bar before the 3, 2, 1…this again does not surprise me…I’m am extremely emotional :-p

…some people yell, some people bounce in place, some people pound their own chest (I’m not sure MANY people do this, but it’s reasonable)…

…Let’s see what, elite athlete Katie Hogan does :)

What do YOU do before a workout to psych yourself up?

Reebok’s Crossfit Commercial

This year, I was fortunate enough to attend the entire weekend of the 2011 Crossfit Games which was hosted by Reebok.

Moments before the final workout of the weekend, Reebok aired for the first time their newest commercial…

…Reebok’s Crossfit commercial…

(I know I’m on the right path when I’m watching a commercial and get choked up…or I’m just way too emotional…could be a little bit of both :-p)

Enjoy!

CROSSFIT GAMES 2011

Last year I was lucky enough to cheer on some of my friends in the Crossfit Regionals in Albany, NY. You can read about it right here :) I remember leaving that competition fired up and more than ready to get really serious about my Crossfit workouts. For a while I did…

…then we moved across the country, started working odd hours, and frankly just not taking our health for as much of a priority as we wished we could.

This weekend we had the MAJOR fortune of being able to go watch those SAME friends compete in the Olympics of Crossfit…the Crossfit Games 2011 in Carson, CA.

First of all, let me address the spectators. Healthiest crowd of spectators you will ever see in your life. The spectators are all walking around with 6-packs and huge quad muscles…I just LOVVVVED it.

As for the athletes. Crossfit definitely creates a different kind of person, for sure; but the athletes that make it to the games are a whole other breed of human. There is not a single man OR woman without a ridiculously defined 6-pack. The leg muscles on these people…and the BUTTS! I seriously was in complete awe of everyone there.

I saw men and women walk on their hands for half of a football field, work harder than they ever have in their entire life, push sleds with three times as much weight as their own body across a tennis court, pass out and get up and finish the workout…and I could go on. Different.Breed.Of.Human.

I created the above collage because there are many times when I get myself fired up like this, and then drop off. I love Crossfit, and I don’t see my love for Crossfit going anywhere…but life DOES step in at times, and its important to have the vital behaviors in place to make sure than you make yourself and your goals a priority. So, I am going to make a huge poster with all these inspiring, beautiful, strong (beautifully strong :) ) women, to remind myself of what I’m going for.

No, I don’t plan on competing individually at the Games at any point soon…but I DID make it a 5-year goal to compete on a team at the Games…so I have a lot of work to do…best to get started now.

One of my favorite things about Crossfit is that it completely redefines beauty for women. These women are not skinny…they are fit FOR SURE…but not skinny. They have back muscles, and muscular butts, and big thighs…they’re not afraid to sweat, groan or scream to get the weight up, they’re not afraid of making ugly faces, or ripping their hands open to get a good Fran time. They are so beautiful, and so inspirational for all women. There were women who are 40 years old that were kicking ass. Beauty, redefined. Look at that collage again closely…for those of you out there that think muscles on a woman wouldn’t be sexy…just look again and tell me whether that is actually true.

For those of you interested in reading about who was crowned the Fittest Man and Woman on the EARTH….you can read about it HERE

So inspired, and so ready to rock.

Jen

4 rounds for time:

100 single unders

400m run

50 sit-ups

She looks innocent enough…but her bite is FIERCE!

So, this is a workout that I created a couple of months ago. I laugh thinking of Nick’s response when I came up with the workout… He took one look at the running and looked at me and said, “Who ARE you?”

It used to be that if I showed up to Crossfit and there was even just a 200m run on the whiteboard, I delve to a level of grumpiness that could only be brought on by something wretched..running. I haaaaaaaated running! So to create a workout that had this much running in it is almost as if it were created by the hand of someone completely different! Well, in all reality, I AM a completely different person than I was when I started Crossfit…but anyway.

The first time I did this workout a couple of months ago, I got a time of 24 minutes.

Nick expected the same greatness out of me (yes, I am tooting my own horn, it was greatness…I pushed myself as hard as I have pushed myself in far too long!) this time around. The last time I did it I was wearing my pink high-top chucks, and got a mad rash on my back from some crazy chemical the city of Santa Barbara sprayed on our poor lawn.

My lovely boss, Matt (at lulu), likes to check up on that rash from time to time by loudly asking me “Hey, how’s that rash doing??”…in front of customers…haha.

I digress…

My first time was about 24 minutes…so last night I decided to change just one thing. I decided to go barefoot. I haven’t done much barefoot running at all, so I was nervous to find out what would happen to my feet after a quick mile run.

I’m not going to lie to you, about 3/4 way through my first 400m, I started whimpering thinking, I can’t doooooooooo this. Then, I mentally b%#tch slapped myself in the face and said, “stop whining, YES YOU CAN!” and went straight to the sit-ups. After that whole workout, I only had a little bit of raw skin on the bottom of my foot (although, I think I have abnormally tough feet since the last time I went for a pedicure the guy performing the procedure..yes procedure, took out a bottle and just pointed at it and said “we need…” and scrolled across the bottle was “Callas Remover”…awww mannnnn). I definitely woke up in the middle of the night with throbbing feet as well, but by this morning, it was nothing to write home about.

So, did I beat my time?

Well, I did my final sit-up at…

22:50!!!

I crushed my last time…BEING BAREFOOT!!! I swear I’m way faster barefoot…I was pacing less than 7 minutes for my mile time…crraaazzzzyyyy!

This is such a great workout, and its a workout you can do ANYWHERE…you just need a rope :)

On to even MORE exciting news…

Tomorrow morning, Nick and I will be driving down to LA to watch our friends from Crossfit Route 1 in Beverly compete as a team in the CROSSFIT GAMES!!!!!! Read all about it HERE!! and read about our beastly buddies HIZZZ-ERE!

I will take TONS of pictures, and share lots of phenomenal stories when I get back :) Soooooooooo excited!!!

Much love,

Jen

Doesn’t Get Better!

After starting this blog about 35 times, and erasing all of its contents, I’ve decided I’m just going to LIST all the cool/awesome/fun/amazing things I did this weekend!!! :)

Art gallery opening for Ms. Amanda Cannon’s INCREDIBLE photography!

Crossfit workout with Amanda and Bethany as my team mates :)

2-hour breakfast date/talk with (again) Ms. Amanda Cannon. Loved every second of it! :)

ROLLER DERBY with Nick and Andrew…sooooo freakin’ AWESOME! That definitely reawakened my desire to try out for the team!!

Engagement party!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :) :) :) No…not mine…Jon Park and his lovely GF Brooke’s :)

Early Sunday rise and a drive into Boston to do a 6-6.5 mile run (I rollerbladed, Nick ran) around the Esplanade. Perfect weather, so much fun!!! Only to end the run with giving Nick a hamstring stretch in the middle of a crowded park (while there was a flash of mortification and awareness of odd looks, I quickly remembered…this is my life, and will be as long as I can see…better get over that quick!)

AMAZING brunch in the North End!!! Sausage covered in peppers and onions, over a bed of mashed potatoes :) Topped off with single egg :) SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO good!

Crossing off EVERYTHING on our list of things to do for the day! Including watching the Xfit games, and two jumps in the ocean :)

Finding out one of my best friends in the world got engaged to her best friend/love of her life last night!!!!!!!!!!!! Sooooooooooooo excited for you guys!!!

Great, AMAZING, weekend! How was YOUR weekend?! :)
