@ss Berries and Handstands

Weird title huh? :) Before I get into the definition of an @ss berry (although some of you are ALL too aware), I’ll start from the beginning.

Yesterday was a rough day for me. I was not my usual overly chipper self; as a matter of fact, it was quite the opposite. A simple sensitivity that was triggered all too early in the morning lasted the whole day through. Silly? Maybe…but I am who I am, and I am real, and I struggle with things…:-p So anyway, that being said, yesterday was draining for me and I was looking forward to getting in that gym at 7. To make the gym all the more alluring, my friend Amanda Cannon was meeting up with me for her first weekday workout in the ole’ NorthShore box; ANDDDDDD Kathryn and Evan are back! :) I think I made it pretty obvious I had missed Kathryn when I bolted, squealed and jumped on her :) I missed you Kathryn :) hehe!

We started out with 3×5 deadlifts. We had to work up to our 3×5 weight (which is typically 80% of our one rep max- last time I tried for my one rep max, it was 150 with proper form, and 160 in a NOT so proper formation…), and I found mine to be 115. I think that I could have gone up to 120-125 perhaps, but I stopped at 115 last night. We had to do three straight reps at that weight, and five rounds. Since Amanda and I were switching off, changing weights, and struggling with the metal clippers, we only got in 3 rounds (metal clippers: the things that hold the weights on…if you have a proper name for this, I’m DYING to know…the guy at the platform next to us found Amanda’s battle with that clipper QUITE humorous :) .

The workout:

50 situps

10 jump squats (go down into a low squat, JUMP up, back into low squat)

40 situps

20 jump squats

30 situps

30 jump squats

Quick and painful it was :)  Just how I like ‘em :)  The MOST painful part? The ass berry. What the heck is an ass berry?? Well, let’s put it this way…you’re laying on the rubber flooring of a gym, pounding out situps as quickly as you can, and when you’re done 120 of them, you have…road rash on your bum. Yes…a piece of your bum is missing…THAT is an ass berry. Let me tell you something I WASN’T expecting…the wrath that a shower can bring to an ass berry. Yeah…I may or may not have actually screamed. :-p

At the end of the workout I saw Nick doing handstand pushups on the wall. Now recently my little addiction is handstands. I like to do them in parks or really whenever I can without feeling OVERLY mortified. I, yes, need to get over that. Anyway, so I went over to attempt doing handstands against the wall for the first time since discovering I can do handstands. I tried a good 20ish times…getting myself up there a little too hard so I would ricochet off the wall, getting up there and then sliding down sideways, catching my feet on the mat and plowing head first into the wall…yeah, these were a few of the many disastrous results I had before anything even close to correct took place. Nick was sitting on the mat, watching, suggesting some helpful tips, and rather enjoying the entertainment while he stretched out after the workout. Then, in steps Kathryn :) I ADORE Kathryn. I think Kathryn should be a Crossfit coach because she’s FREAKIN’ awesome at it! After seeing me plow headfirst into the wall and I said, ‘I quit’…she said, “No way..that is NOT going to be the last thing you muscles remember about doing a handstand…let’s go” “What?” “Come on..up” So I pull my bum off the mat and stare down the wall. After a few pretty great attempts (Kathryn spotting me like a pro), some tweaks, and a couple good ones that ended with me collapsing due to laughing at Amanda and Nick…I got this:

Thank you Kathryn! You’re the wo-man!!! :)

Looking forward to an action/fun packed weekend!! Game night with friends tonight (which the last time we had game night ended in midnight snacks of paleo burgers and vegetables…and of course, ROCK BAND!!!), nutrition seminar (so freakin’ excited!!) with Whole9 at Crossfit Boston tomorrow morning, then workout at Xfit Boston, hanging with my man tomorrow night, and picking an outrageously expensive amount of blueberries at Cider Hill Farm Sunday :) Hey, you got to last those suckers through the winter! :)

Can’t wait for the weekend! Can’t wait to hear about yours!!! :)

Soooooo Excited!

So as of 10 minutes ago, I am officially attending the Whole9 workshop at Crossfit Boston this weekend with seminar leaders, Melissa Urban and Dallas Hartwig. The seminar will be from 9-1pm, so that’s 4 SOLID hours of SOLID nutritional knowledge!! Yes, I am paying a solid amount of money to spend my Saturday learning about nutrition…and I couldnt’ be more excited!!

Here’s what the workshop has to offer:

  • The good, bad and ugly side of how your food choices affect your metabolism, health and longevity
  • How certain food groups are negatively impacting how you look, feel and perform, even if you don’t immediately notice their effects
  • What you should be eating to look, feel and perform your best – and why you don’t really need to weigh and measure all your food to achieve excellent results
  • A fool-proof meal planning template to help you manage meals, snacks and pre- and post-workout nutrition (including recommendations, examples and recipes)
  • Discussion of common errors – ways to get it wrong when you’re doing everything right
  • How to keep your nutrition plan on track during real life challenges, like traveling for work, dining out or family events
  • The best way to incorporate “cheats” into your diet, enjoying the foods you really want without compromising your overall health and fitness goals
  • And most importantly… how to break unhealthy patterns, habits and cravings related to food, and change the way you eat for the rest of your life in a healthy, balanced, satisfying and sustainable manner

Also, while you’re at it, check out Melissa’s blog. “Urban Gets Diesel“, and their webpage Whole9 Life. Can’t WAIT to be locked and loaded with tons of new knowledge that I can hopefully pass on to all of you!!! Can’t wait!

Fight Gone Bad…Not So Bad??

Yes, I know FGB is brutal. Yes, I am aware that those of you reading it who have DONE FGB may be thinking..you probably didn’t WORK hard enough it you think it wasn’t that bad. Well, I did. I grunted and made more noise than I usually do in a workout. I lifted more in the push press than I ever do in a workout. I did prescribed weight for ALMOST everything, except the wall balls, and I went up to 12# instead of my usual 8# (and just ONCE  upon a time I did 10#). In essence, I worked my TAIL off!

Why then did I find it to be NOT THAT BAD? It’s alllll mental guys. FGB is not heavy weight…its medium weight (or light for some of you I’m sure), with a heavy work load. It’s not heavy on weight, its heavy on met con (metabolic conditioning). So I’m DEFINITELY not saying it’s EASY..no no no no…it’s hard..its HARD work! However, if you think of it as just a minute at a time, it’s done before you know it.

Now it was my first time ever doing FGB, so in the car on the way to the gym I was telling Nick that I wasn’t so sure I wanted to do this workout anymore. I have heard of people puking from this workout…often.

To refresh your memory of what the workout was:

Fight Gone Bad

3 Rounds. 1 minute at each station. Your score is the amount of total reps you do (you count the calories on the rower)

Row

Wall balls (prescribed is 14#, I did 12#)

Sumo Dead-Lift High Pull (Prescribed is 55#, CHECK!)

Box Jumps (20″ prescribed!)

Push Press (55# prescribed!)

1 minute rest

So, back to what I was saying…I was nervous. So, being the kind, encouraging, calming man that he is ( hehe :)) Nicholas told me, “Jen, just get a number on the board. Don’t go all out and kill yourself this time…just get a number on the board”. So! That is exactly what I did! I paced myself starting from the first of the three rounds, and stayed pretty consistent all three rounds.

My score :)

1st round: 70 reps

2nd round: 66 reps

3rd round: 64 reps

Total:           200

I feel pretttttty darn good about this. ESPECIALLY since this was my first time doing FGB :) Next time pushing it just a little bit harder will come naturally, and at that point I will have a little more experience using the amounts of weight that I did this time (I’m still VERY new to a lot of those weights. The last time I tested my press, my one rep MAX was 55#. The last time I did Sumo Deadlift High Pulls I used 45 as opposed to 55 pounds. I have never used a 12# ball before for the wall balls, and I am still very new to using the “big girl box” for box jumps.).

Overall? Fight Gone Bad, even in humidity, wasn’t quite as scary as I thought it would be. If you conquer the mental aspect of it, KNOWING that you only have to work for 1 minute at a time on each station; but still work your bum off…it’s done before you know it, and WHAM, you just had an INCREDIBLE, ass whooping of a workout :) Needless to say, I’m taking tonight off :)

Have a GREAT day guys :) It’s WEDNESDAY!!! We’re half way through :)

Split Jerks Make Me…Well, A Jerk…

Split jerks! Sweet, I LOVE split jerks!! Yada yada yada…

That lasted all of 10 minutes…

A split jerk:

We were to do as much weight as we could safely (and with good form) do 3 times, 3 times, 2 times, 2 times, then 1 time, 1 time, 1 time (to find our ONE REP MAX). Boom! I put up 65# three times in a row, easy. Then 75# three times in a row, easy. I ask Nick whether he thinks I can do ten more on each side twice…he thought it would be fine since 75# three times was so easy. Well, this is where I started to fall apart. 95# is locked and loaded on the rack, I get that nervous butterfly feeling I get before a heavy lift. Let us remember that this means I’m putting 95# OVER my HEAD! Yeah…so I think its normal to be a little nervous (eek!). Danny comes walking over to watch me, and BOOM, I get it up once. I go for a second time, and boom! up but then lose my balance and drop the weight. This was my first time ever “bailing” the weight, and it scared me…a lot. It was unnecessarily loud, and I think I just panicked a little that I could have seriously hurt myself. Then to add to it…I HAD CLOSED MY EYES! What the HECK did I do THAT for? So, I take the extra 10 pounds off, and decide (with Nick’s advice) that I work on my form at 85# (since I COULD get the 95# up twice, but my form was all off). Supposedly I wasn’t “splitting” enough, and I was actually PRESSING the weight at the top, according to Nick. When we were home last night talking about this I was EXTREMELY defiant on this theory. “Nick, I can’t even press 60#!! There is no WAY I was PRESSING 95#!” I supposedly, however, WAS! He thinks that if I was getting underneath it enough, I could put upward of 130# over my head (that’ll be NUTS!).

After taking the 10 pounds off, I tried to pick the weight up to “clean” it and get it back up to shoulder height, and couldn’t do it. I got really discouraged at this point…looked at Danny with this pitiful ”help me” face, and apologized. At this point, I literally felt a lip quiver…I was NOT loving split jerks as much I was when I walked through the door. Now, let me preface this by saying, I don’t CRY at the gym…and I came DAMN close last night. Because I was tired or in pain? No…because I was FRUSTRATED! I have this “I should be good at stuff” attitude the first time I do it…so silly…and DEFINITELY leaves plenty of room for disappointment.

Then, after practicing a few more split jerks, and bailing a few more times (sooooo unnecessarily loud…) Nick looks at me and says, “I KNOW you can “clean” that weight up” So with all my built up frustration, I walked over to that bar and cleaned it like it was my JOB! Honestly, I remember thinking afterward that it wasn’t even SLIGHTLY heavy…biggggg difference from when I did it before and couldnt’ get it past my knees. I turned around and there was this look of pride coming from Nick’s face that I have never seen before…beaming! I was SURE though that when I had tried it before it was A LOT more weight…but he was POSITIVE it was the same…and that it was all mental. I had committed to it…

After all that, we did a workout of 21, 15, 9 front rack loaded lunges (I used 45#) and burpees. Let me tell you something, my butt is going to hurt like nothing I have ever felt later today…I just know it. Those lunges were BRUTAL! :-p

As for tonight’s workout…this may be the first official night I throw up at Crossfit, we shall see. Tonights workout is Fight Gone Bad. This is the workout I hear most often gets people’s name up on the pukey board…

Fight Gone Bad
3 Rounds
1 Minute each station, 1 Minute rest between rounds
 - Row
 - Wall Ball (20#/14#)
 - Sumo Deadlift High Pull (75#/55#)
 - Box Jump
 - Push Press (75#/55#)

Add Total Reps for score, count calories on rower.

Can’t wait to tell you about that workout tomorrow!! :-D

Weekend Warriors

It would be extraordinarily easy to grumble and groan about how miserable Monday mornings are…especially when a Monday morning has to follow the act of such an incredible weekend! I will, however, pass on the grumbling, and instead fill you in on the weekend success’!! :)

I am so excited to tell you about Friday nights workout. I did, in fact, leave a hour and a half early from work to partake in the 5:30pm workout.

The workout:

21 Overhead Squats (I used 45#…prescribed is 65#…not yet guys..not yet.)

42 Pullups (blue banded…while I DID use the red band on Thursdays workout, there were just too many in this workout for me to red band them)

15 O.H. squats

30 pullups

9 O.H. squats

18 pullups

I did, indeed, rip a little again (Grrr), but I finished the whole workout in 11 minutes, 44 seconds :)

On the board for the end of workout challenge was a mile run time trial. I kept looking outside the entire workout thinking, there is NO way we’re running the mile, its POURING! To be perfectly honest with you, I was happy about this. I HATE running…with a fiery passion.

Come the end of the workout J.P says what I was dying to know…

“We will be running the mile…if you want…it’s optional.” Optional, he said it, I dont’ have to do it. Before I could even process this thought, however, I found myself turning to Nick and saying, “I think I want to run it.” He agreed to run it with me.

I am SOOOO glad I did :) While I came dangerously close to throwing up behind JP’s car, and ran a slower mile than usual (8:20…not BAD at all for right after a HARD workout!)…I LOVED running in the pouring rain, I LOVED that I did something I hate for the sole purpose of stretching myself and improving…and I LOVE that I could run the whole thing, no stopping, and felt pretty dang good the WHOLE TIME!!!

Saturday’s workout was a toughy as well…whew! :) I get there at 9am to meet up with my lovely friend Amanda Leigh Cannon :) We look at the board and I start thinking, “yeah that looks tough…but it doesn’t look tough enough to be in teams…and I’ve NEVER been to a Saturday workout where there wasn’t teams…”

“Anchor Man”

400m med ball run (I had a 12 # slam ball that I had to carry on the run)

30 Burpees

50 sit-ups

30 OH lunges (with a 25# plate)

50 box jumps

30 ring rows

400m med ball run

Here’s the way it went down…We were split into teams of five (I was the only female on the team)…it’s done in a relay format. So I decided to go out for my run first…as soon as I got back, the next person started on THEIR run, and I got started on the burpees, and it went like this all the way through. WHOA MAMA!! 26 minutes of straight working your ass off!! Seriously… AWESOME workout! :) One of my favorite feelings about that workout…I felt like I could keep up with the boys, and that felt DANG good! :-D

The rest of Saturday was blissful :) Breakfast with the gang, beach day in Gloucester, a date with my love to go see Inception (incredible…totally messed with my head for a good hour after…!), topped off with a trip to the beach at the end of the night, to sit and talk next to the water (I loved this…).

Sunday was the Culture Festival in Salem, and exactly ONE YEAR since I met Nicholas Araza :) I can honestly say babe, that I have smiled more in the last year than I did in the five years put together before you :) Sappy…yes…but I don’t care :)

I would LOVE to know what YOUR favorite part of the weekend was :)

Finally, for your viewing pleasure, some AMAZING Crossfit pictures by my good friend Amanda Leigh Cannon :) You’re the BEST lady :)

Success and Short Shorts

While some people use their earned time to take off a little early on a Friday to go to the beach, or get a beer at their favorite pub…I’m taking off an hour or two early to…

go to the gym :-p

I usually NEVER go on Fridays to the gym because the latest class is at 5:30pm. The problem with this is that the earliest I get home usually is 6pm…see the issue there? SO! Since I wasn’t able to get into the gym as much as I had hoped this week, I have decided to get my weekend started a little early so I can get my bum to the gym! Not a bad way to kick off a weekend of fun! :)

The workout is Josh:

Josh
 - 21 Ovehead Squats (95#/65#)
 - 42 Pull-ups
 - 15 Ovehead Squats (95#/65#)
 - 30 Pull-ups
 - 9 Ovehead Squats (95#/65#)
 - 18 Pull-ups

Challenge:
 - 1 Mile Time Trial

I can (almost) guarantee I will not be putting 65# over my head tonight…but I may surprise you and I both! Eee…time trial for the mile…don’t love that…but sometimes you got to do something JUST BECAUSE you don’t love it…or else you would never do it.

I aspire greatly...

As for last evening, I have some personal success’ for myself! Yesterday I went to buy some new shorts to workout in, and I decided to try on those really short, yoga pants material type, shorts that I see a lot of crossfit ladies wear. I wanted to know the appeal. Now…to preface this…I used to wear pants all summer long because I hated shorts (my legs) THAT much. I remember the first time I ever wore shorts to Crossfit I felt like everyone was staring (and not in a good way), which I know no one cares…but I was THAT nervous.

So anyway, I’m standing in the TJ Maxx dressing room yesterday, and all of a sudden I find myself with a problem I was NOT prepared to have! I LOVED THEM! As a matter of fact, I loved alllll the pairs I tried on so much that I didnt’ know which ones to get! I bought two, and left the store happy. The next challenge however was not going to be so easy. It’s easy to love short, spandexy type shorts on you when you’re standing in the comfort of a 5ftx5ft stall. HOWEVER, the thought of walking into the gym with those shorts was NOT so secure. The result? I walked out of that bathroom wearing those shorts, and not even thinking about it for a second! How did that happen?! I have no idea how that happened, but to me, it was a HUGE success :)

The workout was great too :) I, unbeknownst to me, stumbled into a Level 1 class, so I didn’t end up doing the workout I was planning on doing. I did, instead, a modified Helen :)

5 rounds:

200m run

12 (25#) KB swings

6 pullups (WITH THE RED BAND!!!!!!!!! Now, tonight’s workout involves a total of 90 pullups, so I cannot promise a completely red banded workout for me, but I will darn try!)

Great night, great morning today with Nick and Alexis at morning rituals :) So much to be thankful for!!! Um…and hello…ITS FRIDAY!!!!!!!!!!!! :-D

Tying Loose Ends

For a year now, I have been going STRONG with the healthy changes in my life. I feel good about this. As I have said before, I struggled with sticking to a decision, action, you name it; for more than a month at a time (and I’m thinking a month is pushing it). So the fact that I’ve been not only sticking with this for the last year, but also voluntarily shouting its praises from the mountain tops…well, that’s just pretty darn cool :)

Here’s the thing however…

Recently, I feel like I’m not getting the results I want/need. I love all the new muscle that has grown in, so NATURALLY, I want to be able to see them a little better! In order to do that, I need to lose a little more fat to show off the hard work! My body, I believe, is holding on to the fat due to my diet. “But I thought you ate a healthy diet Jen!!” I do! However, there is ALWAYS room for improvement, and let’s face it, I still have my moments :-p

I started reading “The Primal Blueprint” by Mark Sisson (if you’ve never checked out his blog, I think you would love it! Its FANTASTIC!!!! Mark’s Daily Apple) and it reawakened my drive to clean up my diet even more! It also reawakened my excitement for this pursuit of total health. So! with that…I also know I need to stay consistent with Crossfit. I have YET to be in the gym this week, and here it is Thursday! So I am going to lay out some goals, clear and defined, and you (involuntarily) will be held witness :) mwaaahhh hahahahaha! :)

-I, Jennifer Nadeau, will strive to be present in the NorthShore Crossfit gym, 4 times a week (that is 3 times during the work week, and a Saturday workout). If, by some chance, I cannot under any circumstance make it into the gym, I will do a workout at home instead.

-I will limit my coffee intake (along with coffee comes a little bit of coconut milk creamer and some sugar) to one cup in the morning (or if I miss that, one a day period.)

-I will drink more water! (as Nick says, you want to be a soup, not a stew :-p)

-I will FINISH the Primal Blueprint (I’ve had book ADD as of recently :-p)

-I will buckle down and finish my Anatomy/Phys class quickly with the utmost quality.

-I will continue to wake up at 5:30am every morning.

How’s that?! :)

Tonight’s workout:

- 5×5 Weighted Pull-ups

5 Rounds
 - 10 Box Jumps Over
 - 10 Candlesticks
 - 200M Run

So excited to be back in that gym! :-D

To Drug Or Not To Drug…

Good GOD please give me some advice!

Yes, I’m about to get personal…

Yes, I’m probably about to let you in on a little too much information…

Oh well.

I am about to keel over from pain from CRAMPS! Seriously…I’m talking all blood draining from you face, pain shooting down to my knees, strong urge to get up and move, watching to tear my hair out of my head…cramps!

Here’s the dilemma:

In my journey to remain natural and healthy, I asked my lovely boyfriend for some chiropractic advice. When asking what I should do for these severly painful little joys, I was told to take deep breaths into the belly. While that was nice, it didn’t help it all together, and it only worked while I was taking deep breaths. Second, I was told to apply some direct pressure; again, while that is nice, it’s nearly impossible to do all 8 hours of my work day when I am answering the phones, typing and what not. Thirdly, and this was not from Nick; drugs. Tylenol to be exact. Now, let me preface this by saying that as long as I have been alive, I have been averse to taking pain meds/drugs. When I had my tonsils removed at the ripe age of 20, I hardly used any of the pain meds they provided. When I had a couple other surgeries where Vicodin was provided, the bottles stayed full. I don’t like taking pain things, not even Tylenol. However, right now, I would do just about ANYTHING to stop this…SO…

Tell me why I shouldn’t…

Or tell me what I could do instead.

I think this is a common struggle for people with a similar lifestyle. In a world where there is such easy access to instant gratification, instant relief…while you’re in the midst of a pain storm, the easy pop of a pill doesn’t seem like such a bad idea.

In the meantime, I’m holding out, and these two little white pills are sitting next to me SCREAMING they’ll take away the pain…

What’s a girl to do!?

Ladies Night

Everyone needs some girl time…and I am no different from anyone else…Unfortunately, I have missed out on two of my favorite ladies this week…

Barbara and Annie.

Barbara and Annie you ask? Well, if you go to Northshore Crossfit, or you do Crossfit in general, you’re PROBABLY picking up what I’m dropping…if not, let me introduce you to them.

Barbara

There is so much wrong with that picture…

anyway!

Barbara is:

5 Rounds  - 20 Pull-ups - 3o Push-ups - 40 Sit-ups  - 50 Squats

3 Minutes Rest Between Rounds

She packs a mean punch, but she is sooooooooooooooooo much fun!!!! Super bummed that I missed her Monday!

Now, let me introduce you to my friend Annie:

Annie

These pictures are ridiculous…

Annie is one of my FAVORITES!!

50,40,30,20,10  - Double Unders - Sit-ups

I have literally not been able to get to Crossfit yet this week, and I won’t be able to go tonight (which is Annie!). I am a little frustrated with this since last week I was doing sooooo awesome! I went 4 times, and Nick and I did a workout on Sunday together. So, I’ll make sure I go tomorrow, maybe TRY to go Friday morning, and definitely go Saturday. Next week I’ll be back on my game!

Have a great Wednesday guys! :)

Doesn’t Get Better!

After starting this blog about 35 times, and erasing all of its contents, I’ve decided I’m just going to LIST all the cool/awesome/fun/amazing things I did this weekend!!! :)

Art gallery opening for Ms. Amanda Cannon’s INCREDIBLE photography!

Crossfit workout with Amanda and Bethany as my team mates :)

2-hour breakfast date/talk with (again) Ms. Amanda Cannon. Loved every second of it! :)

ROLLER DERBY with Nick and Andrew…sooooo freakin’ AWESOME! That definitely reawakened my desire to try out for the team!!

Engagement party!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :) :) :) No…not mine…Jon Park and his lovely GF Brooke’s :)

Early Sunday rise and a drive into Boston to do a 6-6.5 mile run (I rollerbladed, Nick ran) around the Esplanade. Perfect weather, so much fun!!! Only to end the run with giving Nick a hamstring stretch in the middle of a crowded park (while there was a flash of mortification and awareness of odd looks, I quickly remembered…this is my life, and will be as long as I can see…better get over that quick!)

AMAZING brunch in the North End!!! Sausage covered in peppers and onions, over a bed of mashed potatoes :) Topped off with single egg :) SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO good!

Crossing off EVERYTHING on our list of things to do for the day! Including watching the Xfit games, and two jumps in the ocean :)

Finding out one of my best friends in the world got engaged to her best friend/love of her life last night!!!!!!!!!!!! Sooooooooooooo excited for you guys!!!

Great, AMAZING, weekend! How was YOUR weekend?! :)
